Post-registration and post-enrolment courses are frequently provided by the organisations which provide course leading to registration and enrolment. A list and contact information can be found at the Education link. The professional organisations listed below also offer courses that may be of interest to nurses and midwives.
The Nurses and Midwives Board is a registering authority and does not provide assistance in finding employment. The NSW Health system (public sector) is the largest employer of nurses and midwives and information about employment opportunities may be found by going to www.health.nsw.gov.au and follow the link to “employment”. Newspapers carry many advertisements for positions in private and public health facilities and other services which employ nurses and midwives. Websites such as www.seek.com.au or www.mycareer.com.au or www.careerone.com.au may help in identifying employment opportunities. Telephone directories such as www.yellowpages.com.au provide listings of private and public hospitals, aged care facilities etc. which may offer employment opportunities.
The New South Wales Nurses' Association is the industrial association or union for nurses and midwives. See www.nswnurses.asn.au
The College of Nursing (www.nursing.edu.au) and the Royal College of Nursing Australia (www.rcna.org.au) are professional organisations which conduct education programs and conferences to assist nurses in maintaining ongoing competence, issue newsletters etc. and lobby to promote the interests of nurses. The NSW Midwives Association (www.nswmidwives.com.au) and the Australian College of Midwives (www.acmi.org.au) provide similar professional support for midwives. The Enrolled Nurse Professional Association (www.enpansw.org.au) provides similar professional support for enrolled nurses. Nurse Practitioners may be assisted by the Australian Nurse Practitioner Association (NSW Chapter) (www.nursepractitioners.org.au). There are many other special interest groups, too numerous to mention here. It is suggested that a search of key terms on your favourite internet search engine may help locate and identify special interest groups. The websites of the College of Nursing and Royal College of Nursing Australia (both noted above) include links to a number of organisations.
The NSW Health Department (www.health.nsw.gov.au) provides resources that may assist nurses and midwives in their practice. The Nursing and Midwifery Office (www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing/) provides links between Government and the professions. The Pharmaceutical Services Branch (www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/pharmaceutical/) of the Department is delegated to administer legislation relation to drug administration. Other branches of the Department are involved in activities such as licensing private health care facilities, monitoring occurrences of infectious diseases, promoting rural health and many more.
