Role of the Health Care Complaints Commission
The Health Care Complaints Commission is a statutory authority established under the Health Care Complaints Act 1993. The HCCC receives and deals with complaints concerning the care and treatment provided by health practitioners and health services.
The HCCC may investigate complaints about nurses and midwives. Section 46 of the Nurses and Midwives Act 1991 provides, among other things, that the Nurses and Midwives Board must consult with the HCCC in deciding what action is to be taken in regard to a complaint. If the HCCC considers that a matter is sufficiently serious to warrant an inquiry before the Nurses and Midwives Tribunal, the Board must comply. The HCCC is the frequently the prosecuting body when matters are heard before a Professional Standards Committee or the Nurses and Midwives Tribunal.
