Applications for Authorisation as a Nurse Practitioner or Midwife Practitioner
Pathway 2 Applications

From 1 January 2010, all applications under pathway 2, for authorisation as a nurse practitioner or midwife practitioner must provide evidence of completion of a masters degree that is relevant to their clinical practice context, and a transcript of the course.

All Applications

newNew applications and applications for re-authorisation received from 1 March 2009 will need to address the following requirements:

* Verifications of advanced practice should be requested from senior nurses or midwives, nursing or midwifery peers, senior allied health professionals and medical colleagues (with the exception of medical residents and inexperienced registrars).
* The verifications should be submitted from the referee directly to the Nurses and Midwives Board, as a hard copy.
* Applicants are to advise the Board, in their application documents, of the name and position of the peer they have requested to provide the verifications of advanced practice. Should these not be received within a reasonable timeframe, and before the application is assessed, the applicant will be notified so that they can follow up with the referee.

Successful applicants are encouraged to obtain clinical supervision / formal mentoring from a senior nursing, midwifery or medical colleague or experienced nurse or midwife practitioner, in their context of practice.

Authorisation of Nurse Practitioners

The Nurses and Midwives Board has endorsed the National Competency Standards for the Nurse Practitioner. The standards were developed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Endorsement of the National Competency Standards has resulted in a review of the Board’s assessment criteria for initial authorisation as a nurse practitioner, and for authorised nurse practitioners planning to apply for a further period of authorisation.

Registered nurses, developing an application for authorisation, should refer to the Competency Standards and provide, in their ‘package of evidence’, detailed information showing how they are able to meet the standards, competencies and performance indicators. Some performance indicators may be related to practice as a nurse practitioner and may not be achievable by an applicant for initial authorisation.

Authorised nurse practitioners wishing to apply to be authorised for a further period should refer to the National Competency Standards for the Nurse Practitioner (standards, competencies and performance indicators) when assembling their evidence of continuing knowledge, competence and experience at an advanced level.

Registered midwives who are contemplating applying for authorisation to practise as midwife practitioners should contact the Board's office for information about separate requirements.
Intending applicants may be interested in reading the following documents. If you are unable to access them here, printed copies may be available on request from the Board's office.
