Upon initial registration as a registered nurse or midwife, or enrolment as an enrolled nurse, a nurse or midwife may practise for a period of 12 months. In order to continue practising, the nurse or midwife must pay the prescribed annual practising fee and be issued an authority to practise for each further period of 12 months.
For administrative convenience, the prescribed period used by the Board finishes on the last day of the calendar month.
The Nurses and Midwives Board issues a reminder notice within the last two months of the period for which the nurse or midwife has been authorised to practise and the reminder is forwarded by post to the address appearing on the Register. However, it remains the responsibility of each nurse and midwife to write to the Board or visit its office to apply for an authority to practise and pay the prescribed fee each year. Cheques and money orders are accepted by mail and cash is also accepted from persons paying personally in the Board’s office. In case there is a problem, it is recommended that the butt issued by the Post Office, for any money order or postal note, be retained until the official receipt and authority to practise are received.
If visiting the Board’s office in person, a nurse or midwife is required to provide suitable identification, preferably including a photograph and signature.
If another person is delegated to pay the fee, that person must have a letter of authority signed by both the nurse or midwife and the delegate in the nurse’s or midwife's presence, authorising the person to receive the official receipt. If suitable identification is not presented, the payment will be accepted but the official receipt and authority to practise will be forwarded by mail.
The fee should be posted or delivered to the Board’s office on or before the last working day of the month in which it is due. Envelopes received after the end of the month are checked to see if they were postmarked prior to the due date. If the practising fee is being posted close to the due date, it is suggested that the clerk at the Post Office be requested to stamp the envelope with the Post Office cancellation stamp showing the day on which it was lodged at the Post Office.
Where the fee is not received by the due date, the registration or enrolment of the nurse or midwife may be cancelled.

|
• |
A nurse or midwife must be currently registered with the nurse registration authority in the jurisdiction in which the nurse or midwife is employed by a health facility. |
|
• |
The terms of employment require the nurse or midwife to cross into New South Wales to provide nursing or midwifery care for a period of time, but the majority of time is undertaken in the jurisdiction in which the employer is located. |
|
• |
The nurse or midwife must apply to the Nurses and Midwives Board of New South Wales for fees to be waived for initial registration, and for annual renewal as appropriate. | The following documentary evidence is required:
|
• |
Current registration in the jurisdiction in which the nurse or midwife is employed. |
|
• |
A formal letter from the employer which identifies the nurse or midwife, advises the role of the nurse or midwife, the requirements of the position and confirms that as part of the employment the nurse or midwife must provide nursing or midwifery care in New South Wales. This letter should include the number of days each week the nurse or midwife is required to cross into New South Wales to provide care, and the days of employment spent in the jurisdiction where the employer is located. |
| Note: |
For the waiving of fees to be considered, the above information must be provided at the time of initial application and, to remain currently registered, on an annual basis. |
