Education of Registered Nurses

A pre-registration nursing course must provide a broad foundation in nursing to prepare the graduate to practise professional nursing including the management of patient care across the life-span and health/illness continuum. The course must encompass preparation for practice in health promotion, acute and chronic stages of illness and disability, and within the clinical fields of medical/surgical nursing, mental health nursing, community nursing and aged care nursing.  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health studies must be included in the course and students must be able to develop awareness of the cultural diversity which exists in the Australian community.

A nurse who has completed a pre-registration nursing course conducted by a university is, on initial registration by the Nurses and Midwives Board, a beginning registered nurse who works under the direction of, or has access to, experienced nurses until such time as, by virtue of experience or further education, the nurse is able to practise with greater autonomy.

Courses leading to registration as a nurse in New South Wales are conducted at the level of Bachelor degrees undertaken in universities or at the level of post-graduate study.
Competency standards

The National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (4th edition) are used in assessing all courses and individual applications for registration.
Shortened Courses

Persons who have completed prior study may be able to undertake shortened courses. Special-purpose graduate entry courses have been approved and these courses permit persons who hold prior qualifications (e.g. a degree in another discipline or certain non-degree nursing qualifications) to complete education for registration as a nurse in a period of less than the usual three-years duration. Recognised shortened courses are identified by titles such as graduate entry, accelerated pathway or bridging courses in the list of recognised courses  - see link below.

Credit for Prior Study in Recognised Courses (such as three-year Bachelor of Nursing courses) may be permitted if prior study was undertaken at an Australian university within a reasonable time period and if the learning objectives and content of the previously-studied subjects are substantially similar to the subjects for which credit is granted.
