Education of Registered Midwives
The Board requires that midwifery courses provide the knowledge and essential midwifery experiences, which enable students to develop and demonstrate the competencies of the midwife as approved by the Board.
In broad terms, the course must equip graduates to practise midwifery safely and assume responsibility for providing a professional standard of care for the woman, her baby (born or unborn) her partner and significant others (hereafter seen as encompassed by the term “the woman”). This care should be provided in partnership with the woman within a continuity of care framework during pregnancy, birthing and early parenting within the chosen environment.
The course must also encompass woman centred reflective practice, which is evidence based and incorporates cultural safety and a primary health care philosophy.
On completion of a midwifery course leading to registration as a midwife as approved by the Board and conducted by a recognised tertiary education institution the midwife is expected to fulfil the current World Health Organisation international definition of a midwife.
