Competency Standards
Competency standards describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for practice by nurses and midwives. The standards will be used by education institutions in developing courses and they may be used as a reference in circumstances where a person or organisation wishes to assess whether an individual demonstrates the attributes of a registered nurse, registered midwife, nurse practitioner or enrolled nurse.
Competency Standards were initially developed by the Board in the 1980s when the primary responsibility for the education for nurses and midwives was moved from health providers to education providers. The early versions of competency standards in New South Wales were developed for use in this State only. In 1990, the Australasian Nurse Registering Authorities Conference (ANRAC) initiated a project to develop competency standards for registered nurses and enrolled nurses in all states and territories of Australia. Subsequently the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council was established and it assumed oversight of national competency standards, including revisions of the standards for registered nurses and enrolled nurses, and development of standards for midwives and nurse practitioners.
The Nurses and Midwives Board has endorsed the following competency standards excluding the introductory pages. As the legislation in New South Wales does not permit the Board to assess competence for continuing registrants or to insist on competency assessment as part of the renewal process, the "Introduction" in each document is not appropriate for this State.
