Assessment Programs

Applicants for registration or enrolment may be referred by the Board to undertake assessment programs.   This may occur in instances where a person's education is not adequate for registration or enrolment but the Board considers that the deficits could be addressed by completion of a short intense program of orientation to practice in Australia and assessment of an applicant's knowledge and skill against the applicable Australian national competency standards for the registered nurse, enrolled nurse or registered midwife.

Applicants referred for these programs are, most commonly, those who have been educated in other countries but where one or more deficits have been identified and the deficits are able to be addressed in an assessment program. For example applicants for registration who have attended univeristies which, although located in other countries, are considered to have the characteristics of Australian universities and if the applicants have completed courses at the level of  Australian bachelor or graduate degrees but the clinical practice in those courses was in health care systems quite different from that in Australia, then there may be a referral to undertake an assessment program.  Applicants with more significant education deficits will be required to undertake more extensive education.

Persons, who were previously registered or enrolled in New South Wales but have been absent from practice for some years, may sometimes be referred to undertake an assessment program. If able to demonstrate knowledge and skills which are adequate for current practice, these applicants may be eligible for registration or enrolment again.
