The Nurses and Midwives Board is established and operates under the provisions of the Nurses and Midwives Act 1991 to exercise the powers, authorities, duties and functions prescribed by the Act.

The Board is the statutory authority responsible for the registration of nurses and midwives, the authorisation of nurses and midwives to practise as nurse practitioners and midwife practitioners respectively, and for the enrolment of nurses in the State of New South Wales.

The Nurses and Midwives Board is listed in Schedue 2 to the Public Finance and Audit Act 1983 and is a statutory body within the meaning of the Annual Reports (Statutory Bodies) Act 1984.

The original Nurses Registration Act was passed by the New South Wales Parliament in 1924. The Nurses Registration Board was established and commenced meeting in 1925 with the first nurses registered in 1926.  In 2004 legislation changed the name of the Board to the Nurses and Midwives Board.

What We Are Not

New South Wales Nurses' Association:

The New South Wales Nurses' Association (NSWNA) is the registered union for all nurses in New South Wales. The Association represents the industrial interest of nurses employed under all awards and agreements registered in this State in both the public and private sectors. Its role is to protect the interest of nurses and the nursing profession.

The College of Nursing:

The College of Nursing (incorporating the NSW College of Nursing) provides support for nurses and achieves these goals through education and professional development for all nurses, and by contributing to policy making with governments and relevant health organisations. The College of Nursing represents nurses at all stages of their careers, providing access to the latest information on nursing practice and giving support to facilitate career advancement.

Nursing and Midwifery Office, NSW Department of Health:

The Nursing and Midwifery Office (NaMO) provides advice on professional nursing and midwifery issues and on policy issues, monitors policy implementation, manages State-wide nursing and midwifery initiatives, represents the NSW Department of Health on various committees and allocates funding for nursing and midwifery initiatives.
